Marine Engineering Career Path
The engine department runs the machinery that keeps vessels moving. From QMED to Chief Engineer, this path requires USCG license exams, sea service, and deep mechanical expertise.
Career milestones
- QMED / Oiler — QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department) is the entry-level licensed engineering rating. Endorsements include Oiler, Fireman/Watertender, and Deck Engine Mechanic. QMED Oiler is the most common starting point.
- Junior / Assistant Engineer — The first licensed engineering officer grade. Requirements include sea service as QMED, passing the USCG engineer exam, and officer-level STCW endorsements. Tonnage/horsepower limits apply.
- Senior Engineer — With additional sea time at licensed grade, engineers progress through unlimited license classes. Vessel type (steam vs. diesel) and horsepower rating gate advancement.
- Chief Engineer — The Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for all machinery and technical systems aboard. A Chief (Unlimited) license requires thousands of days of qualifying sea service. Chief Engineers on large offshore vessels command exceptional compensation.
