Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) Career Path
OSVs support offshore drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. This hybrid path blends deck-officer licensing with DP (dynamic positioning) certification — a valuable specialization that commands premium pay.
Career milestones
- Entry-Level Deckhand / OS — Many OSV companies run cadet programs and accept entry-level applicants with TWIC, MMC, and Basic Safety Training. Gulf rotation schedules (typically 28/14 or 28/28) make this an attractive starting point.
- Able Seaman — AB on an OSV includes cargo operations, crane-assist, line handling for platform tie-ups, and anchor work. OSVs operate in offshore conditions that accelerate experience accumulation.
- DPO Trainee / Junior Mate — Once licensed, OSV mates pursue DP certification through Nautical Institute–approved courses and sea time. A DP Basic certificate followed by sea-time logbook entries and a DP Advanced certificate opens the highest-paying OSV positions.
- Chief Mate / DPO — Chief Mates with a DP Advanced certificate are the most sought-after officers in the Gulf OSV market. The role involves cargo management, DP operations, platform approach planning, and crew supervision.
- Master / DPO — OSV Masters with DP certification and offshore experience are among the best-compensated mariners in the US fleet. Major OSV operators offer premium day rates plus rotation benefits.
