Tankerman Career Path

Tankermen handle cargo transfers aboard tank vessels — one of the most safety-critical roles in the maritime industry. The Tankerman PIC endorsement can be added to an MMC by any mariner who qualifies, making it a powerful career differentiator.

Career milestones

  • Deckhand on Tank Vessel — The first step is gaining sea time aboard a tank vessel. Many mariners pivot to tanker work specifically to earn the sea time required for Tankerman PIC qualification.
  • Tankerman Assistant — Tankerman Assistant is an interim endorsement that allows supervised cargo operations. It requires 30 days sea service on a tank vessel and a practical demonstration.
  • Tankerman PIC — Person in Charge of transfer operations. Requires 90 days on a tank vessel, a USCG-approved course, and an exam. Tankerman PIC holders are in high demand on towing and barge operators throughout the Gulf and inland waterways.
  • Licensed Mate / Master (Tank Vessels) — Licensed officers on tank vessels combine their deck or towing license with Tankerman PIC. This combination is exceptionally well compensated on petroleum and chemical tanker routes.
