The QMED and Engine Room Career Path

The engine department keeps vessels moving. This guide covers the path from entry-level Wiper through QMED ratings to licensed engineer, and how sea time and USCG exams gate each step.

The Engine Department at a Glance

The engine department operates and maintains the machinery that drives the vessel and its systems: main engines, generators, pumps, fuel and lube oil systems, HVAC, and steering gear. Compared with the deck department, engine work is more mechanical and hands-on with tools, and less about navigation and cargo. It suits people who like troubleshooting and understanding how systems fit together.

Starting as a Wiper

Wiper is the entry-level unlicensed engine rating — the engine-room equivalent of an Ordinary Seaman. Wipers clean, assist with maintenance, learn the plant, and stand engine-room watches under supervision. Like other entry roles, it requires an MMC, TWIC, and USCG medical but essentially no prior sea time, making it an accessible way into a technical maritime trade.

Becoming a QMED

QMED — Qualified Member of the Engine Department — is the senior unlicensed engine rating and covers several specific endorsements such as Oiler, Fireman/Watertender, Junior Engineer, Electrician, and Deck Engine Mechanic. QMED endorsements require qualifying engine-room sea time and passing the relevant USCG examinations. QMED Oiler is the most common first QMED endorsement.

The First Engineer License

The first licensed grade is typically Designated Duty Engineer (for smaller plants) or Third Assistant Engineer. Reaching it requires substantial QMED sea time, USCG engineer examinations, and officer-level STCW endorsements. Engineer licenses are limited by propulsion horsepower and, historically, by steam versus motor (diesel/gas) plant experience.

Advancing to Chief Engineer

From the first license, engineers climb through assistant grades toward Chief Engineer, the officer with overall responsibility for all machinery aboard. Each step adds qualifying sea time at the licensed level and, for unlimited licenses, extends horsepower authority. Chief Engineers on large or specialized vessels are among the best-compensated mariners in the fleet.

Offshore and DP Machinery Work

Engine-department mariners are in strong demand on offshore supply vessels and other DP-class vessels, where redundant power and thruster systems are central to safe dynamic positioning. Understanding power management systems and DP-related machinery can make an engineer especially valuable in the offshore energy sector.

Skills That Accelerate the Path

Formal or informal training in diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and refrigeration pays off directly in the engine room. Meticulous maintenance-record habits and a safety-first approach to lockout/tagout and hot work build the reputation that gets you promoted and rehired.
